SUZUKI FLUTE

The Suzuki method of music education, based on the work of Dr. Sinichi Suzuki, is most widely known for programs in strings - particularly violin and cello. However, music instruction on other instruments is also popular – and this includes flute.

Dr. Suzuki modeled his teaching on the way children learn their language, first by imitating simple sounds and words, and gradually building their level of complexity. Music is an aural art, so we give children a chance to listen to recordings of the music, to listen to the teacher, and to listen to themselves. Reading notation is introduced as students are ready.
Flutist Toshio Takahashi has compiled the Suzuki Flute Method. Takahashi was a flute student of Marcel Moyse, one of the greatest flute educators of our time. Takahashi has been able to develop an outstanding progression of repertoire for Suzuki Flute. The listening and learning concept of Suzuki is coupled with appropriate progression in flute technique. Our major goals provide for success in achieving beautiful tone, well-balanced technique and musical flute playing.
I have been a Suzuki Flute instructor for more than a dozen years. I have found that students who listen to music and are guided in their instrument practice are always successful! And they love playing the flute! Student beginners are generally 7-8 years of age. And if the student is small in stature, we work with a real flute that has a curved headjoint. The fingers will never need to relearn anything when the student moves to a regular size flute.
The opportunity also to have group classes (without parent) allows students to review lesson materials, enhance memorization and develop confidence. Hearing their peers play has as strong an influence on a student as teacher demonstration. Groups also give students an opportunity for creative fun!
As your son or daughter joins my studio, I hope you will share in my goals: emphasis on enjoyable learning, achieving success at every step and playing beautiful music!
